Every summer, Visual Arts at Chautauqua Institution (VACI) presents 10 exhibitions in the galleries of the Strohl and Fowler-Kellogg Art Centers, as well as the Melvin Johnson Sculpture Garden. These diverse spaces allow VACI to host a variety of contemporary shows from nationally recognized artists. The focus in our galleries is on contemporary work in a wide range of media and sensibilities.
This summer, VACI is proud to present Next Step, an exhibition of works by several alumni from the Chautauqua School of Art who have gone on to successful careers as artists. There will also be exhibitions of works by contemporary artists as well as surveys of national and regional art, and the highly popular Annual School of Art Student Exhibition. The season begins on Sunday, June 26th with several gallery openings from 3–5 p.m., including the 59th version of the historic Chautauqua Annual Exhibition of Contemporary Art.
This year's Chautauqua Annual exhibition is selected by co-jurors Jennifer Samet and Steven Harvey, co-Directors of Steven Harvey Fine Arts Projects in New York City. Steven Harvey has worked as an art advisor, art dealer, curator, and writer for over 25 years. The gallery’s intimate exhibitions have been consistently powerful and beautifully reviewed. Jennifer Samet is also the author of the popular column “Beer with a Painter” which appears in Hyperallergic Weekend Edition. She has published extensively on contemporary and post-war painting in Master Drawings, ArtNet Magazine, Artcritical, New York Sun, and others. Especially interested in the voice of the artist, she has lectured at numerous universities on the subject of “The Role of Empathy in Art”, and she has also curated several major historical exhibitions.
