Steven Osgood, with his unique combination of theatrical and musical background, brings to the podium a musical incisiveness and dramatic insight which is rare in today’s emerging conductors. He has proven his expertise in repertoire ranging from the Baroque through this century’s most challenging scores.
Steven began the 2016/17 season by conducting the world premiere of Missy Mazzoli and Royce Vavrek's Breaking the Waves at Opera Philadelphia in a production directed by James Darrah. He returned to Juilliard Opera to conduct Jonathan Dove's Flight in November. He is one of three mentors for Washington National Opera's American Opera Initiative in 2016/17, and conducted the world premieres of Adam, Lifeboat, and What Gets Saved in January, 2017. He makes his Lyric Opera of Kansas City and Utah Opera debuts in 2017 with productions of Dead Man Walking and The Long Walk. Steve returns to the Metropolitan Opera this season as cover conductor for Alfano's Cyrano de Bergerac .
In recent seasons Steven conducted the world premieres of JFK at Fort Worth Opera, The Scarlet Ibis, Thumbprint, and Sumeida's Song for the PROTOTYPE Festival, as well as Missy Mazzoli's Song From the Uproar with Beth Morrison Projects. Other notable productions include the critically acclaimed world premiere of Xenakis's Oresteia at the Miller Theater, Tan Dun's Marco Polo with De Nederlandse Opera, La Traviata and La bohème with Edmonton Opera; The Ballad of Baby Doe, Peter Grimes and Tosca at Chautauqua Opera; Glory Denied, The Rape of Lucretia, Bon Appetit! and This Is the Rill Speaking with Opera Memphis; Three Decembers at Atlanta Opera; Tosca at Hawaii Opera Theater, Stephen Schwartz's Séance on a Wet Afternoon and Massenet's La Navarraise with New York City Opera, Philip Glass' Hydrogen Jukebox at Fort Worth Opera Festival, Conrad Susa's Transformations at Juilliard Opera, Lee Hoiby's Summer and Smoke and Virgil Thomson's The Mother of Us All at Manhattan School of Music, and John Corigliano's The Ghosts of Versailles at both Northwestern University and Manhattan School of Music. His concert work included appearances with the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony featuring Tony Award nominee Louise Pitre. He also conducted workshops of two new operas in development: Herschel Garfein's Rosenkrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, and Conrad Cummings' The Golden Gate, as well as readings of Missy Mazzoli's Song from the Uproar (April 30) and Anthony Davis' Revolution of Forms with New York City Opera's VOX 2010.
From 2001 to 2008 Steven was Artistic Director of American Opera Projects, where he conducted numerous developmental workshops. He founded the company's internationally recognized Composers and the Voice workshop series and remains Artistic Director of the fellowship program as it enters its 8th season. He conducted the world premiere of Paula Kimper's Patience and Sarah at the 1998 Lincoln Center Festival. In 2014 he conducted the world premiere of As One by Laura Kaminsky, Mark Campbell and Kimberly Reed in its sold out run at BAM.
Steven has been an Assistant Conductor with the Metropolitan Opera since 2006, working on many productions, including La Cenerentola, Phillip Glass’ Satyagraha, Tan’s The First Emperor, and John Adams' Nixon in China. His conducting appearances include New York City Opera, Edmonton Opera, San Francisco Opera’s Merola Opera and Western Opera Theater, Opera Memphis, Fort Worth Opera Festival, Atlanta Opera, Opera Saratoga, the Gulbenkian Festival, and the Wintergreen Festival. He has been a regular guest conductor with the Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music, and Rice University. His orchestral work includes guest engagements with the Chautauqua Symphony, New West Symphony, Wintergreen Symphony Orchestra and ICE Ensemble.
